The Expert Service – Process & Timeline
Initial Enquiry, Fees & Preliminary Discussion
On receipt of an enquiry, I offer a free initial discussion to consider the suitability of the instruction, clarify the issues in dispute, and confirm whether I am able to assist. Fees, scope of work, and anticipated timescales are discussed at this stage. This initial discussion is non-binding and does not constitute acceptance of instruction.
Terms of Instruction & Acceptance
Following the initial discussion, formal written Terms of Instruction are issued setting out the agreed scope of work, fees, timetable, and expert witness duties. No work is undertaken until the Terms of Instruction have been agreed and confirmed in writing. Once agreed, acceptance of instruction is confirmed and the matter proceeds in accordance with the agreed timetable.
Records Review & Scope Clarification
- All clinical records and documents provided are reviewed to ensure completeness. Where necessary, additional records or clarification are requested to ensure that the expert opinion is based on a full and accurate evidential record.
- Once the evidential record is complete, a detailed chronology, clinical analysis, and independent expert opinion are prepared in accordance with accepted standards of UK general practice and CPR Part 35. The expert report is structured to assist the court or tribunal and typically includes a summary of instructions, documents reviewed, chronology of events, clinical analysis, reasoned opinion, answers to the specific questions posed, and a Statement of Truth.
- Timescale: The report is usually completed within 2–4 weeks, depending on the complexity of the issues, volume of records, and scope of instruction. Any anticipated variation from this timeframe is discussed in advance.
- Following delivery of the report, I remain available to clarify opinions if requested, participate in conferences with counsel, engage in joint expert discussions where appropriate, and provide oral evidence at hearings, inquests, or trials.
